With accolades from Rolling Stone to Esquire & an insightful interview by pride-punk duo PWR BTTM via Alternative Press, legendary queercore punk band Pansy Division celebrated their 25th anniversary as a band with the release of their 9th studio album Quite Contrary on Alternative Tentacles. Marching on without hesitation, the band has shared a politically charged video for album cut “Blame The Bible” via Uproxx today.
The fearlessly outspoken band explained the inspiration behind the topical, politically pungent “Blame The Bible” video (full version available in video description): “While this video contains images that are disturbing, WE are disturbed by the current state of our country and, indeed, the world. Just look at how our gay brothers and sisters are being treated elsewhere: thrown off of buildings, stoned to death, burned alive, etc. And why? It is Pansy Division’s considered opinion that removing ALL religions from society would improve the world immensely. But let’s start with the religion that’s infiltrated our very own backyard: let’s blame the Bible.”
Pansy Division was founded in San Francisco in 1991 by guitarist/singer Jon Ginoli who is joined by bassist/singer Chris Freeman, guitarist/singer Joel Reader and drummer Luis Illades. The first group to be so open with their sexuality, not only did their music and stance defy stereotypic norms of rock musicians being openly gay, they also broke gay cultural stereotypes that rock wouldn’t interest gay people through clever, political prose and infectious melodies. Beginning in 1993, Pansy Division put out an album a year for six years on Lookout Records. Their music caught the attention of former Lookout labelmates Green Day, who took Pansy Division out on tour in 1994 at the height of the mania surrounding their breakthrough album Dookie.
