HONNE have today shared their two new tracks for the month, ‘306’ and ‘Location Unknown’ (ft. Georgia), which are available now via Tatemae Recordings / Atlantic Records. The duo also recently dropped a video for new single ‘Me & You ◑’, in support of this summer’s forthcoming second album ‘Love Me / Love Me Not’ (which will be released on August 24th).
‘306’ and ‘Location Unknown’ offer a further window into the world of ‘Love Me / Love Me Not’. ‘306’ is a playful tribute to James’ knackered Peugeot – which he still drives – and jokes about the false mirage of fame (“one record down and I’m riding in this piece of shit”) whilst reflecting on the days the band spent as fearless twenty-somethings, driving round east London while blasting Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Money Trees’ with the windows down. ‘Location Unknown’, meanwhile, is more melancholic, again displaying HONNE’s innate understanding of the female voice with a guest turn from Georgia.
HONNE’s much-anticipated second, ‘Love Me / Love Me Not’, captures the duality of life’s ups and downs: half the tracks explore life’s positives – love, nostalgia and contentment (Love Me ◑) and the other half life’s great difficulties – heartbreak, anxiety and grief (Love Me Not ◑). The split concept of the album is currently being unveiled via the plan to drop two tracks on the last Friday of every month into release, and is already growing the band’s truly global audience: see over half a billion streams, sold-out tours, and several surprises along the way (like a triple-platinum album in South Korea). HONNE’s is a truly modern success story which is pushed further still in ‘Love Me / Love Me Not’ – a record which acknowledges that for every peak, a challenge is round the corner, and equally that whenever life overwhelms you, better times are ahead.
HONNE’s sometimes-awkward, always-positive portraits of 21st century romance, masculinity and modern city living have seen them bring together a diverse community of audiences around the world. And despite testing new boundaries, ‘Love Me / Love Me Not’ ultimately sees the band’s earliest ambitions come into even clearer focus. They cite the group’s name (“Honne” meaning your true feelings, those you keep to yourself), the name of their early record label (“Tatemae”, which reflects what you display in public), plus the fact that this dichotomy between an online persona and actual reality has become starker since when they first started making music. “Those two sides have been rooted in us from the beginning, but now is the first time we’ve truly demonstrated it. One doesn’t exist without the other, and so this time these songs have to be there together. A lot of films and TV shows either explore the good or bad, but we wanted to show a balance and the grey space.” And it’s in those in-between spaces that HONNE have truly found themselves, and a work of timely, timeless songwriting.
Fresh from an immediately-sold-out warm-up date at London’s Village Underground, HONNE have additionally confirmed an extensive worldwide tour for later this year, which includes their biggest London show to date at Brixton Academy on November 24th.
