“When you feel like the world is watching you, and that you know too much –it’s all going to turn out okay in the end.”
…is the message behind PLAZA’s new single In The Know, the latest in a series of fierce, glacial post-indie snarlers from Hartlepool’s favourite sons.
It is now accompanied by a video, contrasting grubby domestic visuals with sleek, cinematic shots, all with a slightly trippy tinge – much in the same way the band flit between pristine, icy electronics and fuzzed-out rock riffs with their sounds.
Forming and cutting their teeth in the small seaside industrial town it was easy for the quartet to feel isolated from the rest of the UK scene. However taking this relative seclusion and using it to generate a positive energy has seen PLAZA forcefully stretch their own boundaries, resulting in 2 years of consistent acclaim in the national indie sphere.
“It is inspirational being from up here,” explains vocalist Brad Lennard, “I feel like the north east has influenced me to graft harder for what you want, it seems like it is a harder slog up here, you feel like you’re a little isolated. But then in a way that’s a great thing, it’s meant the community has come together to create one loved up scene.”
Indeed, Teeside music has had something of resurgence over the last couple of years with bands such as Avalanche Party, Llovers, and Cape Cub carrying the flag alongside PLAZA.
This determination, and mutual support from fellow outsiders, alongside an ear for a killer tune, has seen PLAZA ride a crest of a wave. Last year saw them play the fabled Reading and Leeds festivals, and support the likes of JAWS, Gengahr, Blaenavon, Ten Tonnes, Dream Wife and more, and build on marked online and radio tastemaker coverage.
Huw Stephens and Phil Taggart at BBC Radio 1 are supporters, alongside John Kennedy at Radio X – with the likes of DIY, The 405, Clash, Wonderland and Indie Shuffle also singing their praises.
Successes along these lines have brought the four-piece to the attention of Leeds-based boutique label Clue Records. With releases from Narcs, Forever Cult, Trash, Avalanche Party and more under their belts the ethic and ethos between band and label in this case feels a match made in heaven, and an ideal platform for PLAZA to continue their steady rise.
Alongside singer Brad Lennard, Matty Swinbourne (Drums), Matty Nicholson (Guitar) and Will Hamilton (Bass) complete the line-up.
In The Know was produced by Forever Cult bassist Alex Greaves at The Nave in Leeds (Eagulls, Pulled Apart by Horses, Trash) and is out nows via Clue Records.
