Communion’s latest signee Boy Bjorn unveils beautiful new single ‘Alone At The Severance’, the follow-up to poignant debut ‘Anchorage’. Tackling philosophical themes against a sprawling, cavernous soundscape, Boy Bjorn (AKA Brian Holl) explains the inspiration behind the track:
“Alone at the Severance was born from conversations about society and existentialism. The mid-20s pursuit of truth. All the long, inebriated talks I’ve had with friends that get compressed to a silent agreement that “we’re believing a lie, but it’s alright”. I think sometimes we’re all just trying to find our own way of saying that. But I wanted to set that thought against a light, ethereal backdrop to shed some of its weight. The more important part of this story is that “it’s alright”.”
Belying the sense of scale and immensity in the tune the entire track was recorded using just a single microphone.
Holl is one half of electronic-folk act Foreign Fields, and it’s from his experiences in this band that he has crafted this solo project. At SXSW 2015, aged just 25, Brian was hit by a panic attack while his bandmates were sleeping, beginning one of the most difficult periods of his young life.
He had already achieved a great deal – national tours, festival appearances and releasing a critically acclaimed debut album – but for the better part of his early 20s he struggled with what might be a familiar story for any artist at his age. Self-doubt, estimations, measuring up, counting trophies. It all came to surface in a cheap motel in Austin.
Once on the other side of this panic attack however Brian could take a deep breath, clarity restored for the first time, and imbued with a new sense of perspective.
Born out of a desire to capture moments lost, this project is full of caricatures and stories from the past. Relationships with family members lost too soon. Beauty in the mundane that’s forgotten whilst distracted.
This nostalgic exploration of the past is used to reflect upon and change the way he lives his life today, hence there’s a conversational feel to the lyrics, with the discussion taking place between his younger self and the man he is now.
