Aeris Roves has premiered new track ‘Running Through 3AM’, which arrives alongside a striking short film ‘Tunnel Vision’. ‘Tunnel Vision’ is a visual accompaniment to Aeris’ forthcoming, debut mixtape, which has today been revealed as ‘Moon By Island Gardens’. It will see a release later this year, hot on the heels of Aeris’ first European headline tour (following dates with Billie Eilish).
‘Running Thru 3AM’ and ‘Tunnel Vision’ offer a further window into the unique world of Aeris Roves. An affecting cut of electro-soul, ‘Running Thru 3AM’ – says Aeris – “is a representation of a past state of mind. It’s for the times during the early hours of the morning when my mind would race around the same thoughts and feelings. I wrote this to map them out and give myself a clearer understanding of my emotions.”
All this precedes the release of ‘Moon By Island Gardens’, Aeris Roves’ ambitious, hugely-accomplished debut mixtape. Written and self-produced alongside contributions from Two Inch Punch, Mssingo, John Calvert and musicians who’ve played with the likes of Frank Ocean, here are songs of love, loss, confusion and curiosity: silky transatlantic R&B, but with a distinctly British backdrop. Initially growing up in Worksop, South Yorkshire, Aeris moved in with his dad in Charlton aged ten (a North/South divide which still creeps into his voice and character today). “There’s always been family problems, like addiction, and as a young person you either react well or react in the worst way, and I don’t think I responded particularly well to it,” he recalls now. “So the decision was made that Yorkshire wasn’t the best place to be, and I went with it.” Moving in with his dad in Charlton, the plan was to stay in London for six months and then return, but Aeris quickly settled into the city, becoming intrigued with the culture, and later discovered musical opportunities that perhaps appeared unavailable during his stint in the Yorkshire choir.
Aeris Roves began to find his place – in every sense – through writing and then producing his own music. ‘Moon By Island Gardens’ befits a childhood raised on The Drifters, Roy Orbison and northern soul, with equal inspiration coming from the confessional R&B of (another artist to go here – Daniel Caesar?) as the rise of UK rap. Suitably, the mixtape was conceived largely late at night, in a secluded spot in Greenwich which also provided the tape with its name. With panoramic views over the city he has come to call home – and space for reflection – Aeris Roves’ intimate, emotive and cathartic songwriting marks the sound of an artist whose future looks set to get a whole lot brighter.
