San Diego Music Thing is proud to announce our latest FREE music business education panel supported by the San Diego Music Foundation. These music education series are planned to help the community become more knowledgeable in areas of the music business critical to any artists career. Panelist for the October 27th event at the Lestat’s West will gather to give their feedback about how to get better at Social Media as a promotional tool and how to properly reach out to media or get a publicity plan in place for your event, tour, and or single/album release.
Panelist – George Varga (San Diego Union-Tribune pop music critic)
San Diego Union-Tribune pop music critic George Varga began drumming in rock bands at 12 and writing professionally about music at 15. A Louisiana native who grew up mostly in Germany, Varga has earned three Pulitzer Prize-nominations for his writing at the U-T and is a voting member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to providing live coverage of the Grammy Awards and festivals from Coachella and KAABOO to the 1994 edition of Woodstock, he has interviewed everyone from Ray Charles, Miles Davis and Britney Spears to Willie Nelson, Kanye West and Eddie Vedder. A double first prize-winner at the 2018 Society of Professional Journalists awards, Varga is also a contributing writer for Jazz Times magazine and has written for Billboard, Spin and other publications. After attending San Diego City College and San Diego State University, he created and taught the 2002 UC San Diego Extension course, “Jazz in a Post-Ken-Burns World.”
Panelist – Ilka Erren Pardinas (Fly PR)
Ilka Erren Pardinas, is a publicity professional based in Los Angeles who designs and implements campaigns for clients in music, art, film, literature, visual arts and business, architecture and design. Her PR firm has run a robust internship program since 2005, helping women, LGBTQ and minorities gain access to music and entertainment industry career opportunities. Ilka founded Fly PR in 1994. Clients today include Smog Veil Records, Hound Gawd Records, Digital Warfare Records, [punk rock] War Stories curated by Theresa Kereakes and Pleasant Gehman, The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices featuring Lisa Gerrard, A Ship In The Woods Music and Art Festival and more. Panelist – Marissa Mortati (the Redwoods)
Marissa Mortati is an owner and social media manager for The Redwoods, an independent Record Label and Collective. Born and raised in Riverside, CA, she was drawn to the unique landscape of the San Diego music scene. She started working as a photographer, videographer, and blogger in San Diego at the age of 19. At 24 she was asked to join The Redwoods shortly after its founding in 2015. Since then she has managed The Redwoods alongside Matthew Molarius and Alfred Howard, produced, edited, and directed video content for the label, and become a freelance makeup artist. The Redwoods included artists such as Birdy Bardot, The Midnight Pine, Rebecca Jade and the Cold Fact, Dani Bell and the Tarantist and Cardinal Moon.
Panelist – Cory Stier (Soda Bar, CULTS, Thrill Me Records)
Known around town as the Soda Bar booker so mysterious and unseen behind the scene Cory can also be found drummer for fabulous and successful bands such as CULTS and Mrs. Magician.
And if those jobs were not enough Cory also owns and runs Thrill Me Records with NY’er Gabe Rodriguez. They recently released The Gloomies latest and have releases from bands like Hideout, Head Band Mathew Logan Vasquez and Mrs. Magician.
Guest Moderator – Bart Mendoza
Bart Mendoza is a music journalist who has written for numerous local and international publications, starting with KICKS Magazine in the late 1970’s, going on to pen stories for publications such as the San Diego Union Tribune, Axcess Magazine, Shindig and many more. Mendoza has a unique vantage point on music, having worked in various aspects of the business. He has helped stage numerous festival’s and events, including “New Sounds” during the 1980’s. As a musician he toured the world in the 1980’s with Manual Scan, the 90’s with The Shambles and currently performs with True Stories. Meanwhile, for over a dozen years, he worked for Capitol Records, as well as Motown, Angel, Chrysalis and others.
The San Diego Music Foundation continues its free, all ages series of workshops and panels. This event October 27th at Lestat’s West will be an overview of Publicity and Social Media
