Sexistential funk-balladeer Brad Stank shares his debut EP Eternal Slowdown out today on Untitled (recs).
The EP includes one the most unlikely collaborations of the year in on the brand new track ‘Butte Magic’ featuring MC Nelson, a fellow Liverpudlian who’s building a reputation for the social commentary of his DIY rap.
‘Butte Magic’ comes across like a contemporary update on a jam between De La Soul and Leon Haywood. Somehow Brad’s supremely laidback vocals are the perfect match for the precise enunciation of MC Nelson’s charismatic rhymes. It makes for a standout moment on Brad’s debut EP ‘Eternal Slowdown’, out today on on Untitled (recs).
The title comes from the opening line of Jack Kerouac’s ‘Mexico City Blues’, “Butte magic of ignorance.”
As Brad explains, “Butte is French for hill, and so he talks about the ignorance of hills, mountains and nature. That was the original influence behind the song. I grew up near the Peak District so it really resonated with me.”
Brad was first introduced to MC Nelson’s music through friends on the Liverpool music scene. “I first heard Nelson rapping beautifully over an old Link Wray sample, so I hit him up,” he continues. “He paints this surreal and wonderful picture of a love affair with all these references to magic, which I loved on the first listen. The chorus is influenced by my eternal need to stare and take photos of those pink evening skies which evoke such emptiness and wonder within me.”
In addition to ‘Butte Magic’, the ‘Eternal Slowdown’ EP features the recent singles ‘Take Me To The Crib’, ‘Condemned To Be Freaky’, ‘Pond Weed’ and ‘Flirting In Space’. It’s completed by the scene-setting opener ‘Slowdown’ and the sweet harmonies of ‘Maithuna’ which gives the EP an afterglow that lingers in the memory. Collectively it’s themed around Brad’s desire to slow down his outlook to life to counteract the increasingly manic world around him.
Described by Clash as possessing a charismatic stage presence, Brad Stank will play an ‘Eternal Slowdown’ launch show at The Sebright Arms on December 12th. The show features support from Lucy Lu, Ralph TV and Terry Venomous, and tickets are available from Billetto.
Brad Stank has recently played shows as guest to Clairo, Club Kuru and Hers, while further praise came from YALA! Records’ singer-songwriter Willie J Healey.
