Dead Soft Premiere “I Believe You” With StereogumAnnounce Debut LP Big Blue On Arts & Crafts

Dead Soft (Arts & Crafts) releasing a new single tomorrow called "I Believe You"

Based on a small inlet island off the coast of British Columbia, Dead Soft have been a source of excitement in North American underground scenes for longer than most bands yet to release their debut LP. At first generating interest in their native Pacific Northwest, where they shared stages with acts like BullyThe Courtneys and Great Grandpa, before releasing early 7 inches on the JEFF The Brotherhood-founded Nashville label Infinity Cat (Diarrhea Planet, Colleen Green, Ed Schrader’s Music Beat), and then signing to celebrated Toronto indie Arts & Crafts (Japandroids, Broken Social Scene, Andy Shauf), the band have remained an active presence on the DIY circuit despite their relatively scarce recorded output.

Today, Dead Soft are announcing their long awaited debut album, Big Blue, with the premiere of the album’s first single “I Believe You” on Stereogum.

At turns sonically bruising and lyrically vulnerable, “I Believe You” serves as a sort of thesis statement for one of the more forcefully cathartic guitar albums in recent memory. Written while the band’s primary songwriters, Nathaniel Epp and Keeley Rochon, were in the midst of removing themselves from a financially and psychologically unsustainable existence in one of North America’s least affordable cities, the track channels the energy of the band’s geographical predecessors like Dinosaur JrMudhoney and The Melvins in a way that expresses a different kind of generational malaise than their forebearers, but manages to sound a surprisingly hopeful note.

As Epp explains to Stereogum, it’s a song about trusting yourself and the people you care about in the face of hardship, and believing that a better life is possible:

“This song is about trusting that you will get to where you’re going. It was written at a time when I knew I needed to make a change in my life. I didn’t know what that change would look like but I could feel it coming and braced myself with the fact that truth and love will prevail in the end.”

In support of the release, the band will be embarking on a North American tour in October and November. Initial details can be found below, with more dates announcing later in the fall.

Big Blue is out October 18th on Arts & Crafts. Listen to “I Believe You” here.
