Rotterdam production duo The Policy reveal new art-house single ‘Changes’ featuring vocals from Tessa Rose Jackson, out via [PIAS] Netherlands

The Policy – ‘Changes ft. Tessa Rose Jackson’
Dutch duo The Policy unveil new single ‘Changes’, a further example of their self-coined and largely analogue production style, ‘Art-House’. Lending vocals is Tessa Rose Jackson, who performs under her own acclaimed alt.pop/multi-media project Someone. They’re teaming up with [PIAS] Netherlands (Rina Mushonga, Matt Simons, Someone) for the release. Inspired by early space disco and artists such as Trentemøller and AIR, The Policy takes you on a dreamlike journey, packed with sounds and melodies creating a sonically rich track. Almost every sound on the record has been recorded with their beloved synth, the Juno 60.Aptly, for a song about the potential unease of change, the track went through layered creation process, and took on many lives throughout – as they explain:“Every new layer took the song into a new direction, with different new possibilities. Some were dark, some were upbeat, in the end it fell somewhere in the middle, reflecting a journey of change. It is a scary thing, but it can bring you wisdom, joy and new perspectives. Without instruction Tessa came up with a lyric that perfectly fit the uncanny feeling the instrumental had.”Also calling to mind Todd Terje or Joe Goddard in its curious exploration of electronic music, they
create their unconventional take on House is by utilising contrasting instrumentation. Based around a meeting of electric and acoustic, the digital vibe and glitchy tones of underground European dance music collides with traditional and not-so-traditional music timbres. Live drums and percussion layer with computer programmed beats, so that it has punch as well an organic character. Whilst meticulously experimenting with sounds and textures however, they never stray too far away from the dancefloor sensibilities that birthed the project and keeps them tied to the Dutch club scene.
Going under the name The Policy, Pierre Hagelaars and like-minded producer Thijmen Hoebink, via their experience in both bands and the electronic scene, provide a unique perspective on today’s dance music. They’ve so far made their name undertaking remix duties for the likes of Tén Fe, J. Bernardt and Otzeki but are now focusing on their own innovative original material.In terms of the relationship between the two and to The Policy, Pierre is the face of the project DJing, and performing live, whilst Thijmen stays in the shadowy background as a producer. ‘Changes’ was composed, produced and mixed by The Policy and features vocals from Tessa Rose Jackson. It is out via [PIAS] Recordings on September 25th.
