‘A haunted 70’s classic’ – The Fader
Late Verlane, alter ego of Swedish singer-songwriter Viktor Persson, is releasing his debut single ‘Poolside’ from upcoming debut EP via Future Classic (Flume, SOPHIE, G-Flip).
Based in Copenhagen and a recent young graduate from the experimental contemporary Rhythm Music Conservatory (birthplace of Smerz), Persson gained the attention of Future Classic after posting just one track on his Soundcloud, joining their roster soon after. He was quickly invited to support Chrome Sparks at Moth Club and has played a handful of festivals all before releasing a debut single proper. Creating wide-eyed alternative pop with warm, androgynous vocals sitting atop lush melodic landscapes. Inspired by the sounds of classic recordings of the 1970’s, futuristic tinges of Elton John and early David Bowie run throughout his music.‘Poolside’ is the debut single from Late Verlane and a perfect introduction to his experimental take on piano ballads. Playing all of the instruments on the track himself, and co-producing alongside close friend Jacob Andersen, he takes the clichés of singer-songwriting, distorting them into something at once nostalgic, yet modern.
Speaking about the inspiration for ‘Poolside’, Persson explains the track is about “seeing love as a fantasy that is unreachable, keeping the drive in you moving forward.” Premiering the track, Fader described it as “a fascinating piece of pop songwriting that recalls 70s singer-songwriter greats like Billy Joel and Elton John as if recorded by Malay.” The track is accompanied by a warm and hazy visual. Directed and shot in Aarhus and Copenhagen by Albert Hildebrand who has worked on multiple videos by Danish band Liss.
Playing around with spaces and sounds, Late Verlane is carving out a unique sound that is timeless and new simultaneously.
