Blue Flowers’ new signing, London-based Joviale creates music that by turns evokes the twinned realities of pleasure and pain in quotidian life. Immersing herself in a plethora of different creative mediums, an insatiable curiosity absorbs the world around her and translates it into music where a beguiling aesthetic sets the stage for lush character dramas.
Joviale’s musicianship comes instinctually, informed more by tone and emotion. The purity of the pain in singers such as Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, and Nina Simone, and the sugar rush of lovelorn 60’s girl groups like The Marvelettes, The Ronnettes, The Crystals and The Shangri-Las, who each sing of their doom with a charming coyness, all number among her formative emotional influences. The narrative thrust of songs in musical films informs the way she tells stories, and the timbre of the percussion and brass in the African music she listened to growing up exerts a powerful tonal influence. While writing and recording Dreamboat, Joviale also collected material for a scrapbook comprised of various fabrics and materials, and cutouts from fashion editorials, alongside religious imagery.
She is an artist keenly destabilising the boundaries of art and its mediums and opting for a transnational assemblage of ideas. She surrounds herself with “soundscapes and treasures from different cultures”, often exploring how movement and nature can be connected to her music. ”It’s my method of weathering a crisis” says Joviale when asked about it, “because every experience is a gift whether it’s bad or good.” After a year of honing her sound on the London live circuit, she was introduced to avant-pop producer Bullion (Laura Groves, Westerman, Sampha). This connection has seen the realisation of one of the most intriguing and ambitious visions in current pop music.
Joviale’s music plays with the listener’s expectations. Through layering, dissonance and silences, her debut EP is colourful, tense, charming, coy, resplendent, rare and unrestrained – sometimes all at once. Today she shared the first cut from it; “A dreamboat can drown… stay awake!” she warns.
Joviale releases debut single ‘Dreamboat’ today with more music to follow soon. She began a residency at Laylow on the 8th of May, with two remaining show dates on the 22nd and 29th May.
