Guest Singer – ‘I Could Never Live Like You Do’
Having introduced himself with two prime examples of his dark party songs in New Experience and My Parallel, Guest Singer expands on his Motorik kraut-rock by way of mellower 80s tinged synths on I Could Never Live Like You Do. It’s the most introspective cut from the project so far, devised by Doncaster’s Jake Cope and comprising Paul Burdett and France Lahmar.
The track is also the final preview ahead of debut EP I’m Irrelevant Now (March 22nd), dropping via tastemaker Manchester label Heist or Hit (Her’s, Pizzagirl).
Jake explains the meaning behind this song, an anti-idolatry theme that flows naturally into his stream of anti-motivational anthems for the post-truth generation – “Heroes are nothing but unreliable narrators created in our own minds. What we idolise in other people is often what we think is missing within ourselves. When you discover these protagonists of perfection are flawed, cruel, or just boring, the let-down of realisation can empty you out. This song is recognition of that.”
A recurring idea of exploration through his EP is the presentation of the self, and with I Could Never Live Like You, Cope is turning his gaze towards people who replace their own perceived deficiencies by constructing part of their identity through (famous) others, and are wont to be let down.
Surrounding himself with the arpeggiated decay of vintage synths, Guest Singer teamed up with producer Matt Peel (Eagulls, Pulled Apart By Horses, Menace Beach) to realise a vision that is as rich in its melodic geography as it is pointed in its textural delivery. Capable of moments of incredible grandeur, Jake steers his romantically doomy mentality through a landscape of dusky synth lines and jumpy Will Sergeant-esque guitars.Guest Singer releases I Could Never Live Like You Do on March 14th via Heist or Hit (Her’s, Pizzagirl, Honey Moon) ahead of debut EP I’m Irrelevant Now (March 22nd).Live Dates18th April – The Castle, Manchester +23rd April – The Polar Bear, Hull +26th April – Café Totem, Sheffield ++ w/ Team Picture
