SL returns today with new track ‘Hit The Block’, which also features quickly-rising rapper Pa Salieu. Colliding two of the UK’s most exciting, intriguing young artists, the cinematic video for ‘Hit The Block’ was directed by Josh Meeks (who also directed ‘Frontline’) and from its gripping opening, is another exciting window into the unique world of SL. There’s more to the mask than meets the eye where SL is concerned. The Peckham-born, Croydon-raised rapper represents a new wave of British youth culture: one borne out of the cross-pollination of genres, where rugged street narratives sit effortlessly alongside intricate, at times serene instrumentals. Having been raised on golden-age MCs like Wu-Tang Clan, DMX, and Jay Z, at just 18 years old SL is taking all these formative sounds and experiences somewhere new. And like those rap greats who inspired him, it’s SL’s multi-faceted approach to his craft – where the production, killer visuals and compelling storytelling all go hand-in-hand – that make him truly exciting. Not to mention landing SL over 100 million streams, co-signs from Stormzy (who shouted him out whilst headlining Glastonbury) and Drake (SL also featured on the soundtrack of the seminal ‘Top Boy’) plus sold-out shows at the likes of Oval Space and Underworld – without so much as showing his face… 2020 looks set to be a breakout year for SL, who followed up viral early tracks like ‘Tropical’ and ‘Gentleman’ (all done in secret at school) with his debut EP, ‘Everything Good Is Bad’. Having since released the acclaimed single ‘Gigantalous’, SL has also collaborated with acts ranging from Kenny Beats and Denzel Curry to Krept & Konan, Bugzy Malone, Nines, and Chip. Whilst remaining an elusive presence, SL’s conversational, occasionally tongue-in-cheek, and crystal-clear flow nonetheless speaks volumes. And this year, SL appears ready to reveal even more about the young man behind the myth, as he continues his incredible ascent from underground hero to uncompromising star.
