Much loved London band Happyness recently returned with their first new music in 3 years, and have today released their new single ‘Seeing Eye Dog’, alongside further news of their album, ‘Floatr’ which is being released 1 May. ‘Seeing Eye Dog’ is one of the most ambitious Happyness tracks released to date, across it’s 7:14 run-time it features guitar solos, heartfelt lyrics, crushingly beautiful breakdown sections and a catchy chorus. Alongside ‘Vegetable’, the first single from the album, ‘Seeing Eye Dog’ is another track that will have fans – old and new – salivating at the prospect of their new album.

Jonny on the track “Some of our songs take ages to write, but this one was vomited out in about an hour the day after a really sudden break up when I was fully in shock. It’s about realising how much you don’t know about the people you know best. And that feeling where your world splits in two for a while, like you’ve come out of lightspeed into the infinite gaping silence of time. But also like a spider being let out of a cup or a fish thrown back – when you’re like wow everything’s so alien and beautiful haha”

New album ‘Floatr’ explores the highs and lows of a hugely transitional period in the lives of Happyness, not only encompassing drummer Ash Kenazi’s coming out and evolution into a fearless drag queen, but also Jonny Allan’s break-up with his long-term girlfriend. It’s about relationships irreversibly changed, and new beginnings. Drag culture and the positivity it embodies has become an essential part of the band’s new identity and expansive live show, a brave move within a scene that is more known for shoegazing than voguing. Ash explains: “There is a reason that PRIDE exists. Coming out is a total celebration of life. The circumstances around which you come to reveal your sexuality are often really tough, and being that vulnerable, and coming to be proud of your identity is a really important thing to share and celebrate. ‘Floatr’ has helped us process some of the difficult stuff because everybody needs that.”Formed in 2013, the band quickly gained a reputation as an unconventional and defiantly independent force in London’s alternative music scene. Previous LPs ‘Weird Little Birthday’ and ‘Write In’ have both received critical acclaim. Their now signature alt-rock, slacker stylings are laden with blissed out melodies, charmingly laid-back guitar riffs and characterful lyrical turns, drawing from predecessors Yo La Tengo, Grandaddy and Sparklehorse, whilst maintaining their own distinctive sound throughout.
