Duchess releases debut EP – ‘Early Days’
Duchess ‘Early Days’ EP
Debut EP out now on Lost Ones Recordings
Today, Duchess – the enigmatic new South London artist – has released her powerful debut EP ‘Early Days’. The 4 track EP is out now on Lost Ones Recordings. Duchess is a 22-year-old South Londoner with a lot of soul.
Despite only releasing two songs to date (debut release ‘Why Can’t We?’ and follow-up ‘Elephant’), it already feels like she’s on a fiercely unstoppable ascension having received a wealth of support from Radio 1, 1Xtra, Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Reprezent and beyond. Originally hailing from Plumstead, Duchess grew up as one of 8 siblings in more locations than she can remember now. Her musical education came from a diverse host of powerful voices, ranging from Whitney Houston, Adele and Tracey Chapman to Prince and Gregory Isaacs and of course, the Spice Girls. Now armed with her own voice that sits somewhere between Jill Scott and Minnie Riperton, Duchess’s own fusion of R&B, soul and hip-hop carries a distinctly London view-point told from the perspective of someone who has lived a thousand lives already. ‘Early Days’ is a formidable introduction. With honesty and compassion rooted at the core of all 4 tracks, the EP tracks Duchess as she starts to unveil her story through. Tone-setting opener ‘Elephant’ finds Duchess boldly confronting her inner-demons, while the slow-burning and sultry ‘Why Can’t We?’ sees her take back control in a relationship breaking down.
‘Blame’ is a sly empowerment anthem for all those looking for answers setting the scene for the EP closer ‘When It All Falls Down’ where Duchess can stand alone but momentously on her own two feet. Every note and lyric on ‘Early Days’ comes from the deepest, darkest corner of Duchess’s heart and as a result it sounds astounding, soulful and pure. While it will constantly work to break your heart, it’s an EP that will ultimately always strive to lift its listeners up – a true reflection of the life that Duchess has lived so far and the message she is destined to carry with her always. In Duchess’ own words – “I found myself going through a lot of different emotions while making this EP. Discovering myself as an artist and finding the right sound took me on a real journey and taught me a lot. I really wanted to create a sound that’s was going to connect with others and their own life experiences. All four songs are very different, but I feel they all connect together and tell a distinctive story and that was important to me … I had moments where I was full of life and felt really happy but there were some days where I felt really emotional – which is what real life is like. I hope you enjoy these songs as much as I have making them.”
