SL has today dropped brand new track ‘Bad Luck’ – his second release of 2020, following a standout collaboration with Pa Salieu, ‘Hit The Block’. Having teamed up with Kenny Beats (“one of the most sought-after producers of his generation”, NME), ‘Bad Luck’ also comes hot on the heels of SL’s feature on Hardy Caprio’s recent single, ‘XYZ’. SL and Kenny Beats teased ‘Bad Luck’ via Twitch earlier in the week, creating a lot of noise around the release.

There’s more to the mask than meets the eye where SL is concerned. The Peckham-born, Croydon-raised rapper represents a new wave of British youth culture: one borne out of the cross-pollination of genres, where rugged street narratives sit effortlessly alongside intricate, at times serene instrumentals. Having been raised on golden-age MCs like Wu-Tang Clan, DMX, and Jay Z, at just 18 years old SL is taking all these formative sounds and experiences somewhere new. And like those rap greats who inspired him, it’s SL’s multi-faceted approach to his craft – where the production, killer visuals and compelling storytelling all go hand-in-hand – that make him truly exciting. Not to mention landing SL over 100 million streams, co-signs from Stormzy (who shouted him out whilst headlining Glastonbury) and Drake (SL also featured on the soundtrack of the seminal ‘Top Boy’) plus sold-out shows at the likes of Oval Space and Underworld. All without so much as showing his face…

Despite extreme circumstances, 2020 is proving to be a fiercely prolific year for SL. Having gone viral with early tracks like ‘Tropical’ and ‘Gentleman’ – all done in secret at school – he is now working on more music to follow acclaimed debut EP, ‘Everything Good Is Bad’.

Along the way, SL has picked up attention from collaborators ranging from Krept & Konan, Bugzy Malone, Nines, and Chip to US rap figurehead Denzel Curry and his now-producer, Kenny Beats. Whilst remaining an elusive presence, SL’s conversational, occasionally tongue-in-cheek, and crystal-clear flow nonetheless speaks volumes. On the strength of songs like ‘Bad Luck’, SL appears ready to reveal even more about the young man behind the myth, as he continues his incredible ascent from underground hero to uncompromising star.  ‘
