‘j0_0j’ Video
j0_0j’ (pronounced joooj) was an important track in the genesis of Leipzig based French / Morrocan / American producer Adam Abdelkader Lenox AKA ZOUJ. As well as encouraging Lennow follow his path, it also spawned his artist name. “The absurd smiley ‘j0_0j’ is translatable to “Jouj” which means “two” in Moroccan Arabic. That gave me the name Zouj, which also means “two” in a different moroccan arabic dialect.. It was inspired by a Moroccan tape from the 90s called “Wahid Junior”, where a severely autotuned child voice is the lead singer,” he explains.
The video for the song is by Franz Impler a 3D artist and animation filmmaker based in Leipzig, Germany and follows our titular character through a twisted alternative reality. It is out now via City Slang Records. The first ZOUJ single “Anxious Sleep“ delved deep into the subconsciousness of the mind and prompted a collaborative movie with fashion designer All Amin aka.

ZOUJ is all about finding the soul in synthetic sounds: “I’m trying to make my machines sound human by emulating errors, randomness and tempo ups-and-downs while i’m trying my best as a human to sound like a machine,” he says. After leaving quite the impression in the European underground circuit with his futuristic Noise Pop outfit Lingua Nada (think Black Midi meets Hot Chip) he decided it was time to venture down a different path. The mission? To discover and develop what modern pop music should sound and more importantly feel like. The result is the most genuine, surreal pop music you’ll hear this year.
