ARIA & BET-nominated rapper and artist Tkay Maidza continues her meteoric 2021 ascent with new single ‘Syrup’, out today. ‘Syrup’ delivers a stomping beat for Maidza to sweetly snarl over, her raps slick between slowly drawn-out bass that grinds with distortion. Maidza echoes, “rich… thick… sweet… sick,” in another energetic slice of stellar rap.
‘Syrup’ follows the recent release of a celestial cover of Pixies’ ‘Where Is My Mind?’ and her anthemic February single ‘Kim’ (feat. Yung Baby Tate), alongside its instantly-iconic Kims-filled visual, which earned a nod from Pitchfork as #2 Best Video of the Month and praise everywhere including The Guardian, PAPER, FADER and Nylon.
2020 raised the Zimbabwe-born, Australia-raised artist to new heights with the release of her Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 2 EP. Across 8 songs, Maidza’s sonic versatility took centre stage, showcasing an eclectic mix of influences that spanned blends of bounce, dark trap, alt-R&B, neo-soul, and her signature modern hip-hop. Its impact saw her on billboards in New York’s Time Square, in features with Pitchfork and British Vogue and included on the FIFA Soundtrack.
The ARIA-nominated EP for Best Soul/R&B Release received adoration from the likes of Stereogum, The Observer, PAPER and more, and was named the #1 Best EP of the year by The Needle Drop. As 2021 continues, expect to see Tkay Maidza deliver drop after drop of unrivalled energy and heat in the forthcoming video for ‘Syrup’ and more promised music to come.
