I used to spend each year in and out of the United States and Canada in my work as a touring musician. I felt like I was a citizen of North America until the border suddenly closed last year.
I was talking with my U.S. Girls bandmate, Kass Richards, who lives in Boston, and I could feel the great divide stretching out between us, and I asked myself, “What does it mean that I was born into this country?”
“The Great Divide,” taken from my upcoming record, The Tower (out September 3rd), speaks to the arbitrary nature of borders and the importance of taking care of all humans across the world.
It’s a reminder not to take for granted the privilege that we have to travel the whole wide world and to savour the little feelings of earthly connection that can be found when visiting a far off country.
Who’s the one who can decide, on which side we fall, and who gets left out in the darkness.
As I reflected on my travels through the redwood forests in California, the wild ocean on the rocky coast of Oaxaca and the narrow, echoing alleys of nocturnal Barcelona during the writing of this song, I also considered my local area.
In the evenings, I would leave St. James Town, my neighbourhood of high-density, aging, 1960’s apartment towers and walk across a footbridge to Rosedale, an area of massive Victorian mansions.
The unequal disbursement of population was so obvious that the ravine separating the neighbourhoods started to symbolize a much greater and uncrossable divide.
