Legendary queer music icon Bitch has been enthralling fans with her singular brand of performance throughout her career. Today, she has announced her new album Bitchcraft due out February 4, 2022 on Kill Rock Stars.
Armed with her arsenal of violins, synthesizers, pulsing percussion and witty lyricism, the new collection takes her sound in a new direction with spectral, heartbreaking, political and beautiful witchy poet pop tracks. Bitchcraft is like Joni Mitchell set to a click track, it’s queer Cyndi Lauper. It’s neon pink, in your face, ready to hex you with its brilliance. It also makes you think: about the state of the world, about evil politicians, about what it means to exist as a woman, and how to find joy along the way.
Alongside the announcement, Bitch has revealed the combative lead album single “Hello Meadow” alongside a colorful music video. Written after a move from the sludgy, claustrophobic (but also wonderful) streets of New York City to a little log cabin in rural Michigan, the song’s electric violins coalesce with birdlike synths as Bitch recounts an industrial capitalist hell while attempting to find beauty outside of it. It’s a psychedelic, dizzying song about mother nature as well as the onslaught of capitalism and its obsession with destroying the natural world.
“Because the song is a wild romp about Capitalism/Industry vs. Mother Nature, I wanted the video to be psychedelic and feel like a roller-coaster,” shares Bitch. “I had a vision of building a dress out of a tent. I was out walking and a woman, about 20 yards in front of me, came out of her house, put a bag down on the street and walked to her car and drove off. As I approached the bag, there was a homemade sign on it that said ‘FREE TENT, BROKEN ZIPPER.’ In a way, what a perfect metaphor for this song! It was all meant to be! Faith Soloway (who choreographed me for the shoot) had a costume designer friend Zoe Sundra that I called immediately and ‘pitched the tent’ idea to her and BOOM. The magic dress was made!!”

Bitch achieved early notoriety as one half of the queer folk duo Bitch and Animal who went on to tour with Ani DiFranco, whom they caught the ears of while playing a gig at a pizza shop in Provincetown on Cape Cod. In the mid 2000s, Bitch went solo, and shared stages with the Indigo Girls, acted in the film Shortbus, co-wrote a song with Margaret Cho, produced two albums of her elder folk hero Ferron, and licensed her music to The L Word.
Bitch started writing Bitchcraft 8 years ago over the course of several moves and political movements. Eventually landing in LA, she assembled a creative coven to complete the project including Anne Preven (Beyonce, Madonna, Demi Lovato) and God-des who helped crystallize her writing and production vision and Roma Baran (Laurie Anderson) who produced the violins on “Polar Bear”. She also co-wrote several songs with Melissa York (Team Dresch, The Butchies) and Faith Soloway (Transparent). Be sure to catch Bitch on tour this fall and stay tuned for more news coming soon!
