Today sees Welsh-born, London-based rising star Hana Lili announce her debut EP Flowers Die In The Summer, due for release independently on October 29th. To celebrate the announcement, Hana has shared a new track from the EP called ‘Don’t Try To Call Me’. Listen to the track HERE.
Striking a balance between bedroom pop and soul, ‘Don’t Try To Call Me’ is an authentic and brassy reflection of Hana’s vulnerability, musing on the complexities of navigating relationships with trust issues. Entirely self-sufficient, Hana wrote and produced the track while also directing the accompanying lo-fi video, shot on her phone using grainy filters.
Speaking on the track, Hana explains: “I wrote this song in the middle of lockdown, all my communications were through my phone. I sat in my room for days on end, and the phone was the only means of communication. It was a frustrating, sad and lonely time for a lot of people. I recorded a guitar loop and sampled it. The sampled guitar riff runs through the whole song; it’s perpetual and reflects the emotions of a groundhog day. I wrote about the feelings of isolation, loneliness, and paranoia. Ironically it’s the most upbeat song of my EP.”
Like many of her peers, quarantine provided the ideal environment for Hana to buckle down into her songwriting within the sanctum of her own bedroom, emerging from the pandemic armed with a stunning 4-track debut EP Flowers Die In The Summer, due for release later this month. Spearheaded by Hana’s unique ear for melody, rugged guitar chords, vulnerable lyrics, and nostalgic noughties-esque pop production, the homespun EP certifies the 21-year-old as a vital new voice within the bedroom pop movement.
Today’s announcement follows on from Hana’s previous singles ‘Stay’ and ‘Red Hearts’, released earlier this summer, which saw Hana deliver a dreamy introduction to her sonic world, combining intimate, confessional lyrics over immaculate self-taught production. With early press support from The Guardian, Notion and The Line of Best Fit and an unexpected play on this year’s series of Love Island, Hana Lili is your latest artist to watch.
