Today sees Melbourne-based producer, DJ and synthesizer enthusiast, Harvey Sutherland, share a remix of his latest single ‘Jouissance’ by legendary dub pioneer Adrian Sherwood. The remix is available to buy/stream from all platforms via House Anxiety HERE and you can watch the video for the original track HERE.
Legendary UK producer, reggae archivist and dub pioneer Adrian Sherwood has reworked Harvey Sutherland’s new single ‘Jouissance’ into a fizzing, half-stepping re-rub. The founder of On-U Sound and Pressure Sounds labels, Sherwood has collaborated across the musical spectrum, from the late Lee “Scratch” Perry to Sinéad O’Connor, Horace Andy and Primal Scream. Harvey Sutherland and Sherwood met backstage at Gilles Peterson’s inaugural ‘We Out Here’ Festival, and as a long-time fan of his productions, Harvey Sutherland could think of no greater honour than to have “Sherwood At The Controls” for this reimagination. It’s 4:49 of “Pure Enjoyment” from this icon of British music.
The original groove-laden track takes its name from a term coined by psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. “I learned the word from my therapist,” says HS. “There’s no easy English translation, but it’s the itch that demands scratching, a masochistic desire.” A naggingly groovy mix of analogue synth flourishes and motorik rhythms drive atop whirls, beeps and acid tones, as Harvey’s addictive melodies take centre stage. Self-described by Harvey as ‘neurotic funk’, the song’s unique repetitive grooves were born from an endless loop of studio perfectionism and psychoanalysis.
“For me it represents an obsessional energy, a frustration in finding the funk,” Harvey laughs. “It’s about acknowledging my shortcomings along the way.”
The accompanying video to “Jouissance” was shot on handycam and freaked out by Parisian VFX auteur Michael Renassia, as Harvey takes his trusty synth on a wild ride through time and space. On the video, Harvey says: “All my plans fell through when lockdown hit, so I had to improvise. I borrowed a friend’s Handycam, strung up a green screen and got to work. Michael took all my janky fragments and turned it into something amazing – he rode the waves of neurosis that the song tries to convey + went deep into the zone.”
Over an illustrious near decade-long career, Mike Katz aka Harvey Sutherland has continued to solidify his reputation as one of the most exciting new electronic artists in the world. From early EPs reflecting his crate-digging influences of soul, disco and funk that became championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson and Jamie xx, alongside sold-out worldwide live appearances at Glastonbury, Nuits Sonores and London’s Jazz Cafe, to collaborations with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Harvey’s world continues to expand. Most recently, Harvey’s track “Priestess” was supported by Paul Woolford on his DJ Kicks mix, while he continues to hone his studio craft. Production on Genesis Owusu’s critically-lauded breakthrough album Smiling With No Teeth, has been accompanied by elite remixes for the likes of Disclosure, Tycho, Khruangbin, Surprise Chef and more arriving soon.
‘Jouissance’ is also the first release that sees HS teaming up with the House Anxiety label. Established in 2008, the vanguard-leading imprint has introduced the world to everyone from King Krule to Courtney Barnett and more recently the likes of Genesis Owusu and the Bad Boy Chiller Crew.
Step into Harvey Sutherland’s neurotic funk universe, as he transcends the psyche with a bubbling and blissful new release, ‘Jouissance’.
