The Hics share video for brand new single, ‘Reprise’New EP coming soon onEMPIRE/THE FIENDS
“Slinky, sepulchral, after-hours nu-soul.” Sunday Times“A sort of R&B Promised Land…this band could be your new obsession” Time Out“The lush ambience is a cover for passionate yearning…superb” Guardian“The Hics occupy their own, fresh space” CLASH
The Hics have today released the video for new single ‘Reprise’, following their recent return with ‘Caught In A Lie’. Both form part of the unique duo’s upcoming EP, which is due on EMPIRE/THE FIENDS in early 2022.
‘Reprise’ explores the fallout at the end of a relationship: those late nights (say The Hics) “being out with an ex and not wanting to go home, because if you leave it could be the last time you’re near them.” It’s paired today with an atmospheric new video, capturing those melancholic and introspective cab journeys back where you’re left to reflect on everything that’s transpired. Soulful, affecting and brutally honest, their new material shows how The Hics have truly found their voice, as writers but also within the flourishing modern day London jazz and R&B scene.
With an early run of sold-out shows, support across 6Music and Radio 1, plus widespread critical acclaim, The Hics were well on their way to building a world of their own; when – following 2014’s ‘All We Know’ – their own world suddenly stopped. A string of tragedies in succession led to a creative standstill, and The Hics stepped away from making music as a band.
As comebacks go, though, The Hics arrives from the most unlikely of places: over on the other side of the world, hip-hop star Bas hears their music during a marathon Grand Theft Auto V session. After falling in love with their ‘Tangle EP’, Bas flies to London and asks the DIY London duo to collaborate. These sessions birthed ‘Ricochet’ and ‘Matches’ off Bas’s critically acclaimed album ‘Too High To Riot’. These records laid the groundwork for Rox and Sam to enter a new creative space as a duo, as they toured the world with the Dreamville family as a supporting act on the Too High To Riot tour. As Rox and Sam explored and developed their musical passion, they developed a close bond with The Fiends, and with a creative team in place, The Hics as a duo were officially reborn.
With ‘Reprise’ and returning single ‘Caught In A Lie’, The Hics have made a powerful yet graceful re-entry to the scene. Their upcoming, as yet untitled EP delves further into themes of love, power, trust, fear and change. 2021 sees The Hics make their much-anticipated return to the music space on their own, distinct terms.
