Jerry Paper is the freaky weirdo musical persona of Lucas Nathan, and “Just Say Play” is the mission statement from their forthcoming synth-pop, weird-rock, bizarro-muzak album
Free Time, out April 15.
Nathan says: “While Free Time is definitely NOT a concept album, I did spend the whole period while making the record thinking about playfulness, curiosity, and their roles in the nature of creativity. ‘Just Say Play’ is basically the mission statement of the record! Coming out as nonbinary was part of a process of dismantling the compartmentalization in myself, and allowing myself to play freely with my gender queerness is one of many ways free play has become a central part of my worldview. I’m just trying to imbue my life with playfulness and freedom!”“Just Say Play” features Leland Whitty of BADBADNOTGOOD on the flute and background vocals from “Los Angeles’ sanest freak”, Jonny Kosmo.
Free Time is an expression of freedom on Jerry paper’s journey to self-discovery as a nonbinary artist, groover, and, most importantly, shaker of ass. The one rule? NO SELF DOUBT! Throughout the album, Nathan invites us to climb aboard their funhouse version of the Starship Enterprise, one whose Prime Directive is self-acceptance— learning to rid ourselves of judgment from without and within, to forgive ourselves for our mistakes, and to boldly go into the Deep Space of our own inner worlds, where our inner wellspring of creativity lies. By the end of the album, Nathan lands their spacecraft and disembarks, and *comes out* (literally and figuratively) from the vessel embracing themselves for who they really are: non-binary, a beautiful flower, nuanced, strange, bizarre, and flawed…with a ketchup stain on their blue dress. When Jerry Paper asks you to hit *PLAY* on Free Time, they mean it in the most literal sense of the word…they want you to PLAY around and have some friggin’ fun for once!
Free Time follows Abracadabra (2020), whose cast of characters included an alien captive surveilled by a mysterious presence and a buff man whose life is thrown into shambles when he is caught smoking meth at his child’s birthday party. Jerry Paper’s first record on Stones Throw, Like A Baby (2018), included collaborations with BADBADNOTGOOD’s Matty Tavares, Weyes Blood, Mild High Club and Charlotte Day Wilson.
