Strabe have today released brand new track ‘Magic’, which is available now on PIAS. The mysterious alt-pop duo have also confirmed details of debut project ‘JUVENOIA’, which will follow on July 22nd. It includes anthemic first single ‘Life On Pause’ – which picked up widespread plaudits and support across 6Music and BBC Introducing – plus the prophetic ‘Best Worst Year’ (which has surpassed 7 million streams after dropping DIY during the pandemic). Strabe set out with the goal of (they say) “putting the full-body rush of when you’re in a sweaty, grungy club with flashing lights and a pulse-like bass into music form. We want this song to echo through you, making you move before you can even think about it… like magic.”
The track also acts as a perfect window into the world of Strabe’s upcoming first EP, ‘JUVENOIA’: a timely but timeless portmanteau of ‘juvenile’ and ‘paranoia’, which soundtracks those chaotic coming-of-age experiences with impressive musical maturity. Like all of the best young pipedreams, the spark for Strabe came in the smoking area. Four years ago, Angelica (originally from Scotland) was at a music festival in Cork and stepped out – Emmet, who was born and raised in Ireland, didn’t smoke but kept them company anyway.
Sitting by the river and chatting about music, the pair quickly realised that they represented the missing part of each other’s project…but failed to swap numbers at the end of the night. Luckily the duo crossed paths again by chance many months later, and Strabe began writing together in various student bedrooms around Dublin. Both, in their own way, used the band (and the blossoming, unconventional friendship at the heart of it) to work through their own emotional journeys.
Songs across ‘JUVENOIA’ explore weighty topics – grief; stagnation; sexuality; gender – with Strabe’s soon-to-be-signature lightness of touch. On bangers like ‘Magic’, Strabe ultimately aim to capture the heady, intoxicating atmosphere of going out, making mistakes, and just maybe meeting a stranger in the smoking area who’s likewise looking to change their life.
Having relocated to London between lockdowns, signed a record deal, and played their first ever live shows in support of Foxes around the UK, Strabe introduced the project with lush first single ‘Life On Pause’. A fitting snapshot for a stop-start, tumultuous few years, Strabe are showing an early gift for finding those moments of ‘Magic’ even in the mundane… Watch out for more from Strabe coming soon.
