Today the sad news reached us that Jeff Hanneman, guitarist for, and founding member of, thrash metal titans Slayer has passed away aged 49 from liver failure. The band confirmed the new via their facebook page.

Hanneman leaves behind his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry.

Hanneman was voted number 10 in Guitar World Magazine’s 100 Best Metal Guitarists of All Time list alongside band mate Kerry King. He also wrote the music for many of Slayer’s most famous songs including, South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss, War Ensemble, Raining Blood and Angel of Death.

Who knows how different heavy and extreme metal might have turned out if Jeff Hanneman hadn’t met Kerry King after a band audition and suggested they work together. Jeff has influenced countless guitarists and will no doubt continue to influence countless more with the musical legacy he has left us. This is a sad day indeed.

Rest in peace Jeff Hanneman 1964 – 2013
