Benny Sings teams up with Remi Wolf for ‘Pyjamas’

Benny Sings teams up with Remi Wolf today for the release of bossa-nova inspired single ‘Pyjamas’. It’s the latest single from Benny Sings’ upcoming album Young Hearts, produced with Kenny Beats and out March 24th via Stones Throw Records. Whereas Benny Sings has always written autobiographical songs, on Young Hearts he looks outward, creating a fictional cast of lovable losers – such as on ‘Pyjamas’, a song about a man with low libido and his other half wanting more. The music video, which Remi Wolf directed, shows Benny and Remi in character as the couple in the song.

“I’m always looking for the anti-hero,” Benny says. “One of the subjects that hasn’t been sung about too much is the male with too low libido, instead of too high. We all know the ‘I can’t get no satisfaction’ take on things. Just seems funny to me to turn that around, a duet where the girl wants to roll around in the hay, and the boy is nervously trying to avoid the question on hand. ‘We could take a walk on the beach… Read a book maybe?’”

Young Hearts is Benny Sings’ first record made with a single producer — beatmaker-to-the-stars Kenny Beats. Kenny is the force of nature behind a diverse array of releases from Vince Staples and Freddie Gibbs to Denzel Curry, and recently earned a Grammy nod for his work with IDLES. It makes sense that the prolific and genre-agnostic producer would find a kindred spirit in Benny, who mines a range of styles from West Coast AOR to ‘70s R&B and hip-hop for his signature sound. The pair connected over DM, after which Kenny invited Benny to work from his home studio in L.A., where they would jam and write during the day. They’d riff off each other, sharing stories, melodies, and adlibs with collaborators Kenny invited over, relaxing into the anything-goes vibe.

Benny says, “I’ve always loved bossa nova. I’ve listened to Getz/Gilberto by João Gilberto and Stan Getz over a million times in my life. This music is light, yet profound, and I love it. So to pay homage to this music on “Pyjamas”, together with Kenny’s crazy drums, is a thrill for me.”
