“Fireflies”, a song inspired by the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, explores dream states and insomniac visions. For its video, director Ambar Navarro went for an old sci-fi theme, with Juliette hatching from a pearl. Her character plays on “a daydreaming Tinkerbell type who travels freely from planet to planet. Joachim acts as a controller of the universe while trying to capture Juliette, who has teleportation powers.”
Coast 2 Coast is the product of Pearl & The Oysters’ move from Paris to L.A. via Florida. The album was written mostly in Juliette “Pearl” Davis and Joachim Polack’s 1-bed apartment, and finished with a host of friends and collaborators including Lætitia Sadier (Stereolab), Riley Geare (Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Caroline Rose, La Luz), Alan Palomo (Neon Indian), Dent May, Alex Brettin (Mild High Club), and Shags Chamberlain, who mixed the album.
Coast 2 Coast explores the idea of travel — physical and mental, experienced and fantasized. It draws on an array of aesthetics and images: Barbarella followed by an Agnès Varda triple bill; the swamps of Florida and sandy L.A. beaches under a mirrorball sun; a radio picking up a faraway broadcast before tuning into an oldies pop station, and crashing waves that melt into the sound of Juliette’s white noise machine.
