Discussing the origins of the soundtrack, Sztanke noted, “Mike asked me to join him on this journey because we have been working together a long time and because we are really close friends and music mates, so there is a level of instinct and ease to our collaborations. Mike’s way of sampling and tweaking material provides an awesome basis for my way of making music ‘cinematic’. With my knowledge and experience in scoring, I knew we would bring a new taste to the process together, especially on the Netflix spectrum. I have worked with Netflix a few times before and am well aware of the music that has been made for other historical shows.
Showrunner and creator of Transatlantic, Anna Winger, really had a clear vision from day one and I think we got pretty close to what she asked of us. Mike and I are so complementary that I ended up working on the samples sometimes, and he ended up working on the string orchestrations as well! In the end, the music supervisors and the editors also helped paste the music into each sequence. Anna challenged us to mix modern music with a taste of the 1940s in a WWII show and now we hear and see the magical results.”
Taking place in Marseille, France in 1940-1941, Transatlantic is inspired by the true story of Varian Fry, Mary Jayne Gold and the Emergency Rescue Committee. Risking their lives to help more than 2000 refugees escape occupied France, an international gang of young superheroes and their famous charges occupy a villa at the edge of the city, where the threat of mortal danger gives way to unexpected collaborations and intense love affairs. Providing the backdrop for this tumultuous time in history, Ladd and Sztanke meld modern elements of musical production and styles, with jazz and klezmer, providing a unique and essential foil to drama taking place throughout the series.

About David Sztanke
David Sztanke first learned classical percussion before taking up the piano at the age of 11. At age 20 he moved to New York to attend Julliard, spending a lot of time in clubs, immersing himself in the jazz, hip hop and electronic music scenes for four years, before returning to Paris. In 2006 he created the group Tahiti Boy and the Palmtree Family and collaborated in parallel with many artists (Emilie Simon, Iggy Pop, Saul Williams, Oxmo Puccino) as a composer, producer, arranger or instrumentalist. On the 2011 project We are The Lilies, Sztanke together with Sérgio Dias from Os Mutantes, and featuring Jane Birkin plus Iggy Pop, created an album which Pitchfork called, “a jubilant, cleanly presented appropriation of both musicians’ styles that charms with skill and contagious energy.” Sztanke teamed up with Sébastien Tellier for the series A girl is a Gun, for which he also produced an album. He performed and recorded with Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio on a project called Modestamente. David has also worked on original music and arrangements for the Paris Philharmonie.
2009 marked the beginning of his collaborations for the cinema: Mikhaël Hers asked him to compose the soundtrack for his first feature film Memory Lane. Thereafter he collaborated with many directors, including Quentin Dupieux for the soundtrack of Wrong and Au Poste, Christophe Honoré, Eric Judor, Jérôme Bonnell, Louis Leterrier and many others. The film Les Magnétiques (Vincent Maël Cardona) for which David wrote the music, won the César for Best Film in 2022. Along with Transatlantic, Sztanke completed a score for the Netflix film, Cosmetic Valley, and is currently composing the soundtrack for Jérôme Bonnell’s next film for Arte. He is also currently working on an upcoming album under his own name, featuring guest appearances from Feu! Chatterton, Jeanne Added, David Krakauer, Bertrand Belin, and Gavin Bryars. His work is sometimes described as influenced by Michel Legrand, Ennio Morricone or François De Roubaix, despite having worked a lot with the Ed Banger label, for which he easily passes into a more electronic register.
