Rory McBride – “Sonic Lullaby”

29-year-old American singer and poet Rory McBride makes the kind of music that is a direct throwback to the Beatnik era and sounds from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Usually, he spoken words over a bed of psychedelic guitars and it’s a sound that will definitely grow on you.

During the pandemic, McBride left behind urban life and turned to nature, spending his time reading and writing poetry and even laying the groundwork for his eponymous debut LP. McBride threw himself into studying the poets, which then led to the simply rendered and hypnotic EP Sonic Lullaby.

Today, we’ll be featuring the title-track “Sonic Lullaby,” where McBride sings over an array of acoustic guitars. The sound is sparse, but at the same time, very emotionally powerful. McBride’s lovely vocals carry over this track as the guitar flits in and out with some great musicianship.

My only critique was that this track was way too short. I would’ve loved to have an extended look at this.

Other than that, I was captivated by McBride’s soft and dreamy sound on “Sonic Lullaby.” And I definitely can’t wait to hear more soon! 6.8/10
