Gracey shares new single ‘Delirium’
GRACEY. She’s the BRIT-nominated star-in-ascent. The architect of irresistible pop hooks that get under your skin and scale the charts to the UK Top 10, amassing more than 140 million streams. Expansive, rough, euphoric and lacerating – these are the forces at play in her vibrant and altogether singular sound. Today, GRACEY returns with her long-awaited new single, ‘Delirium’.
Rising through the ranks at BRIT School where she devoted herself completely to developing her craft, GRACEY’s SoundCloud demos caught the ear of legendary hitmaker Brian Higgins, who invited her to join his famous songwriting collective Xenomania(Girls Aloud, Pet Shop Boys, Sugababes) when she was only 16 years old. Within two years, GRACEY had written her first Platinum hit: ‘By Your Side’ by Jonas Blue featuring Raye. But it was when she was at the helm of her own vision with EPs Imposter Syndrome, The Art of Closure and Fragile that there was a real landslide of intrigue. Her music has been championed by BBC Radio 1’s A-List, The Guardian, The Face, i-D, Notion, NME, Clash and The Line of Best Fit, among many more.
‘Delirium’ belongs to a new chapter for Gracey, born between her home in Camden, LA studios and sessions in Sweden. Teaming up with friends and collaborators such as hyperpop visionary EasyFun and producers AFTERHRS, she has returned to a space of discovery. While her ability to craft undeniable pop hooks remains, sonically she’s now reaching towards the effusive bubbling soundscape of the ‘80s and the crunchy synthesized modernism of hyperpop, grabbing both to create a sound that feels unique to her.
Written about those lazy mornings spent in bed with a lover where all your walls are down and you’re at your most free, it features one of GRACEY’s most starry-eyed choruses, her voice airy and content as she sings: “When I’m here in delirium with you/Take me out my mind to somewhere new.” Punctuating the verses, though, is an uneasy and wonky metallic slap of bass like a warning that love-struck wonder still carries the danger of vulnerability.
Speaking on the single, GRACEY shares: “‘Delirium’ felt like the perfect song to return with as it captures the biggest change in my life since I last released music: falling in love. The chorus of my last single was broken-hearted over the impossible, that ‘now I’ve got to go and fall in love again’ feeling – but it happened! Delirium is a celebration of those long mornings with a new partner, creating inside jokes and falling deeper in love. It’s about feeling safe to be your most free, unfiltered, childlike self and how euphoric that feels.”
The video, directed by Tony Tacheny, follows the idea of placing a bed in beautiful, vast and surreal environments to translate the feeling of endless possibility that love and suspended reality invites.
