“…scuzzy-sweet songs about transness, queer love, and simply trying to figure out [what’s] going on.” – Hearing Things [on “Fishy”]

“…Regan and Scarpati supplant the dreadful unknown with scraps of acoustic guitar and a godly ‘Would you be mine?’ harmony…” – Paste Magazine [on “Old Grimes”]

“It’s refreshing to see a band embrace goofiness and theatricality in ways that indie rock’s irony-addicted tradition often seems vehemently averse to. But that’s what makes Um, Jennifer? so thrilling — they aren’t afraid to look goofy, and their cartoonish, fantastical storytelling never betrays their sensitivity.” – Stereogum

New York, NY (April 25, 2025) – Um, Jennifer? introduced themselves to the world in 2023 with “Girl Class,” a single that fully realized and perfectly encapsulated what the New York City-based duo of Elijah Scarpati and Fig Regan were all about: making rock music that was simultaneously serrated, sardonic and dead serious. The other thing it announced was that this was a band having fun. Their namesake is derived from a mythological deity they conjured up themselves whom they worship and sacrifice themselves to, and Her spirit was invoked by Scarpati and Regan in their “Band To Watch” feature published by Stereogum earlier this week. Last year, the band released their critically adored The Girl Class EP (Billboard, NYLON) and singles “Went on T” (The Line of Best Fit) and “Fishy” (Hearing Things, Ones To Watch).

Today, the band is proud to release their highly anticipated debut album, Um Comma Jennifer Question Mark, via Final Girl Records, along with a new video to accompany its declarative opening salve, “So Sick!.” It follows previous singles “Delancey,” “Old Grimes,” and fan-favorite “Cut Me Open.” The majority of the album was produced by Ariel Loh, who earlier this year became the first trans Asian recipient of a Grammy. Um Comma Jennifer Question Mark is also available on vinyl, the band’s first offering on the format. Final Girl Records partnered with Loh’s recently launched Trans Music Archive for their inaugural release, which seeks to preserve the legacy of trans musicians in physical format. Order the vinyl here.

Um, Jennifer? have also announced the launch of their Patreon where fans can keep up with the band, and for a limited time, be the first to exclusively view the album-length visual accompaniment to Um Comma Jennifer Question Mark, including never-before-seen footage and music videos written and directed by the band. Speaking on the launch, the band says “Um, Jennifer? presents a limited viewing of the full Um Comma Jenna Question Mark visual album. This is an exclusive first peek into the Jenniverse, offered only for a limited time to the real Jenheads. The visual album is a series of interconnected music videos that take us through the entire album, painting us a hallucinatory picture of what it’s like inside this world created by Fig, Eli, and Jennifer.”

Um, Jennifer will be celebrating their new album tonight in New York City with a headlining show at Night Club 101. They were also recently announced as performers at Liberation Weekend, taking place on May 30 in Washington, D.C. at DC9. Liberation Weekend is the creation of Washington, D.C. rock band Ekko Astral and trans rights advocacy collective Gender Liberation Movement. All proceeds beyond event expenses will go to Gender Liberation Movement to help fund and support future rallies, demonstrations, and direct actions in protest of anti-trans policymaking and business activity. Additionally, the band will headline Out & Abt NYC PRIDE! at Brooklyn Monarch on June 27.

Um Comma Jennifer Question Mark Album Bio:

Um, Jennifer?’s debut album Um Comma Jennifer Question Mark is a ritualistic offering to a godlike figure the band calls “Jennifer.” This offering comes in different forms – a whisper that beckons you down the streets of Manhattan, or whatever’s playing through the broken speakers of a back room of a gas station in the middle of nowhere.

Um Comma Jennifer Question Mark is equal parts visual, auditory, and narrative. The album opens into a grimy dive bar in the lower east side of Manhattan, where “So Sick!” weaves us through the magic and malaise that only a night out in New York City provides. “Delancey” picks up immediately for the early morning walk home from the bar after the sun has come up, filled with love-drunk and hate-fueled hallucinations.

Skipping ahead to “Old Grimes,” which falls directly at the center of the record, we find a completely realistic recreation of the band’s first encounter with “Jennifer” in her physical form (usually she just appears to them as a disembodied voice over a mystical red rotary phone). Along the way, we meet characters in “Fishy” and “Car Wash” caught between the worst night of their lives and dating their enemy’s mom out of spite.

All of this closes out with their fan favorite track “Cut Me Open” which reflects our narrators begging to be sliced, eaten, and eviscerated by love. While the album starts by lamenting an early twenties apathy, it is answered with a totalizing, near-destructive force of feeling completely alive. This record, like everything Um, Jennifer? does, is a whimsical and visceral portrayal of transness. It is a beacon calling us back home to one another. It is a radical expression of love.
