Amber–Noah EP

A tiresome welcome to the EP ‘Little Ghost’, by Amber; a salute to everything that is wrong with the modern day music industry.

Amber consists of 5 young university students, who originate from Buckinghamshire. Having recently formed, the band found online success with a cover of Imogen Heap’s ‘Hide & Seek’. The band themselves claim to focus on space and melody, although from listening it’s hard to distinguish whether they’re talking about timing or the solar system.

‘Noah’ is painfully unoriginal, with poor songwriting and the regurgitated Mumford & Sons sound that’s been plagiarised so many times. For the more squeamish amongst you, I wouldn’t recommend watching the accompanying video. Yes, you guessed it; a man looking into the distance, eyes as deep as the oceans and band members running through the woods.

It’s not all doom and gloom. The track ‘Kites’ features some nice fingerpicking from the guitarist and vocals which just edge on being soothing rather than pop-ish. ‘Champion’ is also listenable, if a little cringe-worthy. Amber are clearly a talented bunch, but in future the band needs to refrain from being moulded into place by the generic chart music industry. ‘Noah’ is a prime example of how any song can become popular, regardless of quality, if the right people are informed. If they stick to their guns and develop their own style, they might well go on to make some pretty good music. 4/10
