The Spin
When Rough Trade was born, punk didn’t just rattle the windows, it rewired the room. From a West London store floor stacked with radical records and radical ideas, a community took shape.
Fifty years later, that same independent spirit still runs through every rack, every in-store, every late-night conversation about what music can and should be.
This year marks half a century of keeping music human. On Friday 20th February, we celebrated our official 50th birthday – a moment to raise a glass to the staff, customers, artists and labels who’ve made Rough Trade what it is: inclusive, progressive and rooted firmly in the culture.
The story continues with our greatest indie love songs and a deep dive into 90s dream pop. Plus some new surprises back in stock. Past, present and future, all in rotation.

50 Years of Rough Trade:

1976-1985

In the wake of the mid-late 70s, where clothing, attitude and music fed directly into one another, Rough Trade was born. Here we are 50 years later, with more music, more culture and a lot more to say.

Most Wanted

Olivia Dean is everywhere right now and, thankfully, she is back on our site too. Pre-order the lavender vinyl now, while stocks last. While you’re there, why not pick up a Rough Trade x Manhattan Portage record bag? Perfect to carry your new vinyl and maybe the new edition of the intimate history of Rough Trade by Neil Taylor. Just a suggestion.
