“A captivating warmth and comfort which will ultimately keep you coming back for more” Clash

“Their songs slouch like teenagers, but listen closely and you’ll hear this London band have an ear for melody and lyrical turn of phrase” GQ

Beach Baby have today premiered ‘Big School’, the second taste from their forthcoming second album following returning single ‘Lovin’ Feeling’. With the band’s just-announced London show already sold out, further intimate UK dates have additionally been confirmed, in advance of the follow-up to 2016’s critically acclaimed debut album, ‘No Mind No Money’.

Set against a backdrop of gossamer backing vocals and lilting saxophone, ‘Big School’ finds Beach Baby at their most cinematically melancholic. Inspired in part by Big Star’s ‘Thirteen’ and Lou Reed’s ‘Coney Island Baby’, the song sees Lawrence writing from the perspective of a teenage boy trying to make sense of isolation and romantic limbo. So if ‘Big School’ feels like a particularly sad-eyed closing song to a 70’s high school disco — then that’s entirely appropriate…

With a silky mix courtesy of Nathan Boddy (Georgia, James Blake), the song is launched alongside a suitably atmospheric video, directed by Lawrence and shot  in his Dad’s (very) 70’s home in Glastonbury. ‘Big School also gets a limited 7” release through Flying Vinyl, alongside previous release ‘Lovin’ Feeling’ — and in many ways, the songs are designed to be listened to alongside one another; together, they provide a tantalising preview of the audio-visual world of Beach Baby’s sophomore LP…

But more on that soon.
