“From fuzzed-out riffs to drifting electronic soundscapes, Pond manages to use just about every trick in the psych-rock playbook to create energetic, borderline-unstable earworms that bury themselves deep in your brain for days.” Magnet
A powerful story of hope, exploration and tragedy, Pond’s brand new video for ‘Midnight Mass’ will capture your attention and imagination.
Created by Australian filmmakers Jesse Smith and Jenna Eriksen, the clip follows a melodramatic reconstruction of a news broadcast from the 1980s as a space tragedy unfolds. A hopeful introduction is rapidly transformed to a sense of dread, mirroring the emotional and tonal shift of the song.
Filmmaker Jesse Smith said: “During production we instructed the actors to come in character to the space launch, not to a video shoot. It was an emotionally charged atmosphere on set.”
In trying to keep the clip as authentic as possible, the decision was made to shoot with a 1985 VHS tube video camera, as opposed to creating the effect in post production.
“When we first talked with (Pond front man) Nick it was clear he did not want a traditional promo clip and I think we have achieved that. The video is strange and special, powerful and silly, funny and sad,” Jesse said.
