House of Love / Levitation guitarist meets Adorable singer for haunting break up record.

In a past life Pete Fij was Pete Fijalkowski of Creation records almost-theres Adorable, and Terry Bickers was House of Love’s erratic six string prodigy who set fire to £10 notes in the back of their tour van. Now 25 years on they’ve joined forces for a sparse, rather lovely album documenting the devastation of being dumped in middle age. Bickers’ playing is a masterclass in understated Lou Reed-style picking, bending and sliding, like a whole album of The Velvet Underground’s Pale Blue Eyes, while Fij’s voice has the fragile, worldly wise tenor of Richard Hawley or Ian McCulloch. It could be a tad serious were it not for Fij’s barbed self-deprecating lyrics “Hope, moire addictive than coke” he sings on Betty Ford, “it’s Cupid’s cruel joke” Smart Stuff. (PAT GILBERT) ***
