Acclaimed on the continent, and a brand new thrill for the British Isles, Guadalupe Plata are an exciting mix of cult swamp blues intensity and authentic magnetism with a delicious hint of the dark side. Their live sets are engagingly awesome, fusing guitar music genres with authentic magnetism.
This band are multi award winners (European Album, and Band Of The Year at the Impala Awards and more). More often seen at festivals around the world, and large venues in their home of Spain, they totally packed out their recent live London debut in September. The venue, New Cross Inn, admitted they had never seen anything like what was going on as mass voodoo rave writhing broke out among their stylish, fun loving crowd.
Their performance is a beguiling and bewitching thing. The band rarely rehearses because they live in three different cities and because, at a rhythm of 100 gigs a year, gigs which may extend to various hours, much of the composition takes place before all kinds of audiences. To play every weekend two or three times in a country like Spain you will often be playing in brothels or working men’s clubs. There is a wealth of documentary evidence of these concerts on the web.
They explain the performance in flamenco terms of “duende” or “hechizo” – supernatural terms of invocation, and, well, goblins. In the English speaking context it is probably best just to shake your hips and go where they take you. In any case though their public tends to be young and drawn to wild music there are also, lately, men and women of 30 and over who will compare the experience to performances that marked them in their youth… they speak of Beefheart , Canned Heat, The Fall or Pata Negra….. dark stuff.
Guadalupe Plata, playing their first UK and North / South American tours this autumn, return to London in December for a week of recording to make their follow up album. Then on the Saturday, round off their trip with this live show. Back by genuine demand they are not to be missed and highly recommended.
