With the fall of March and the arrival of April, the UK has entered Bank Holiday season, with Easter kicking things off tomorrow. Whether you’re a chocolate fan or not this means one thing- long weekends, and plenty of time to recover from the gig the night before. Which is good, considering here at Manchester Academy we have more than a few events worth getting involved with.
Take The Shires for example. The country-pop duo of songwriters Ben Earle and Crissie Gudgin define musical hot property at the moment, as sales for their stunning debut, Brave, released at the beginning of last month, go to show. As does the fact the band have been upgraded to the 900 capacity Academy 2 for their date on Sunday 12th April, indicative of their overwhelming popularity and clear ability to fill large (not to mention prestigious) rooms such as ours.
We’re also delighted to highlight that support acts have been announced for The Wedding Present, who arrive on Wednesday 14th November as part of Manchester Academy’s 25th Anniversary Celebrations. The first of which are legendary outfit The Vaselines, who shot to shortlived fame in the late-1980s, releasing the cult album Dum Dum, before disbanding, and only reforming to warm up for Nirvana in 1990. Quite the coup, then.
Alongside those, David Gedge’s side project, Cinerama, will be resurrected for the event, which will have fans of The Wedding Present eager with anticipation to say the least. And, finally, Scottish indie pop songstress Emma Pollock, known for her stunning solo work in addition to playing a prominent part in several talented troupes including The Delgados, completes the additions to the line up. All in all then, better than a boxed egg wrapped in tin foil, you might say.
