GB, Gustav Berntsen, is an artist from Copenhagen who crafts texture-heavy, adventurous guitar music cut with a pop sensibility. On 21 August, GB releases his new album Herzsprung via AD 93, anticipated with its newest single “The Next Day”, out today.

Golden hour, sun in your eyes – “The Next Day” is a track for slow-burning summer days. An acoustic disco groove drives the song forward, while GB’s open-tuned guitar lilts and weaves in the breeze. Cello, grand piano, and percussion expand GB’s four-piece rock band line-up, lending the track a widescreen glow.

The new track arrives alongside two recent Herzsprung singles, shared earlier this year Adrenaline”, which introduced a world of zigzagging guitar, bubbly fretless bass, and rolling percussion; and “Starsound”, on which GB’s baritone vocal yearnings meet lush, intricate guitar playing, languid, textural drumming, and collaged saxophone choirs.

Herzsprung follows GB’s debut record, the collage-based cult hit Gusse Music, which was released via storied Copenhagen label Posh Isolation in 2024 – the label final vinyl issued before they closed down in 2025.

Herzsprung is GB’s most expansive work yet. Written while living in London, the Copenhagen-based singer-songwriter and producer spent weeks cutting up copies of Metro – one of the city’s free newspapers – to form the lyrical foundation of the songs. In makeshift studios, he began bringing these ideas to life.

Where GB’s debut record was shrouded in a downtempo haze, Herzsprung creates a distinct sound that pushes outward: something more melodic, more full-throated, and more assured. The album draws together a wide spectrum of influences; from the groove-driven fusion jazz of the 1970s to Japanese noise-rock psychedelia, anthemic grunge, and outsider pop. There are traces of the alt-pop qualities that GB shares with his Copenhagen peers, but you hear London’s influence too, an urge to stretch rock tradition and break with form.

After finding himself improbably cast in a viral Jaguar ad in 2024, he used the money to book out a studio villa in the Swedish wilderness, joined by a band of trusted musicians. Over the course of a week, the songs — which had previously existed as memos and notebook scribbles  — took full shape through live performance and collective instinct. Tracked largely live to 24-track tape, the result is a record that feels immediate and playful in its execution. It captures the chemistry of an uncompromising band brimming with ideas and welcoming spontaneity.

Herzsprung sifts through the past and present with urgency, cutting it open so that the future leaks out. On the record’s climax, ‘Shit River’, GB is backed by a full choir as he screams for“someplace beaming with more colours,”  “…and everything in between collapsed, rushing floods of insignificance”.

Herzsprung is released on 21 August via AD 93. For more information and pre-order head HERE.

PRAISE FOR GB

“Berntsen plunges into wordless ambience, with eight tracks that recall the Kentucky post-rock scene of the 90s – the Rachel’s-like blend of beautiful guitar melodies and unsettling field recordings; heavy, Slint-y murk – and processed, lonesome Scots pipes. It’s such a distinct record, it only adds to the mystery of what’s going on at this innovative institution – but long may it turn out acts like this.”

 – The Guardian

“Berntsen’s not a polished singer but therein lies his charm, and judicious strings and other acoustic instruments splash a luxe veneer on his homespun creations.” Philip Sherburne, Futurism Restated

“GB’s melancholy vocal tone comes in to meet this lush instrumental dance, his lyrics both contemplative and dreamy.” The Line of Best Fit

“An emotionally delicate and melodically joyful album.”So Young Magazine

“Working with a deliberately restricted palette, he utilizes this minimalist instinct in a startlingly fresh way.” Clash Magazine
