‘Breaking The Silence
SPV / Steamhammer Records www.spv.de
Where to start with a band that started just under thirty years ago in Dusseldorf, Germany. Reforming in 2005 after originally breaking up in 1989 these five German metal heads are going from strength to strength.
After getting hold of ‘Breaking The Silence’ that was released through SPV/Steamhammer Records I prepared myself for a metal onslaught through my headphones. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised as although these guys fit the cliché stereotype of thrash metal that was put into the limelight by bands such as Metallica and Slayer these guys put a much needed twist on this genre.
Technically the album is a rollercoaster of extremely fast paced thrash that shows off how technical the band can be there are also breaks where the band goes from soaring guitar solos to intense breaks where the manic drumming and riffs drive front man Robert Gonella’s rough vocals. This guy sounds as if he has been gargling with bleach with a ferocity that challenges the likes of Barney Greenway from Napalm Death but yet the words can still be deciphered.
‘Breaking The Silence’ consists of ten songs that are up there with the very best in the thrash metal genre and with songs that are as intense as anything that the big four have written. The stand out songs for me, are the brutal ‘Turf War’ with its abrasive drumming and its Iron Maiden styled bass hooks take you on an audio adventure.
This album was produced by Harris Johns who has worked with bands such as Kreator and Sodom and once again he has produced a metal masterpiece. This album is for any metal head who likes their music fast, furious and in your face whilst not being in anyway pretentious. With shows coming up in the Japan and Germany hopefully Assassin will bring their style of in your face, kick in the belly thrash metal to the United Kingdom soon.
