Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross – Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Score

I went to see the film ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ last week, about an hour into the film a friend of mine whispers in my ear “if it wasn’t for the music in this film I would be bored by now” and I agreed. Now this is no judgement of the film as a whole because by the end we all agreed it was a slow starter but definitely more than worth the ticket fee. The music he was referring to was the score by Nine Inch Nails genius Trent Reznor and composer– producer Atticus Ross and what an impressive score it is.

Its a three disc attack of the senses that will take you into a whole other world at times, its one that should be taken in when you really have time to appreciate it. The music is designed to keep the films audience hooked every step of the way and it succeeds wonderfully, as well as this it captures the dark mood of the film without overshadowing what’s happening on the screen. I wont bore you with particular details of each track because that would require me writing a book, but what I will tell you is that Reznor and Ross have used a variety of sounds such as chimes, orchestral voices, ticking clocks, distortion, industrial drumming, piano, guitar and a whole lot more to make every track evoke feelings in you, some that you may not want to feel.

When reading reviews of the score I have read a lot about the work the pair did on ‘The Social Network’, and whilst I agree that work was very good and deserving all the praise it was given I must go against the grain and say I think the work they have done on ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ surpasses their previous projects and is simply outstanding music that only this pair could have put together. 8.5/10
