“I’m releasing a track every month for 12 months from January 30th!”
The consistent theme here is my journey of being a queer black woman overcoming struggles with sexuality and the importance of emotional honesty in music. In this grim but hopeful period, music offered me some semblance of redemption. My personal story of survival and my Jamaican heritage boldly travels through my music. My music is my journal and my weapon, in it I find peace, protection and community.
In 2018 ‘Bedbugs’ was released and racked up thousands of streams. It was followed by ‘Fear’, ‘Made a Fire’ and ’Indecisive’ produced by Kris Harris (Bears Den, Ghost Poet and Belle and Sebastian) and released under indie label LGM records. There is lyrical honesty and natural understanding of musical form within these songs. It is also laced with metaphors like “They’re’s bedbugs in my head, they’re biting my skin and they’re messing with my head”. A subtle undertone of confusion and self discovery.
All three Amaroun releases to date have received plays on BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6 Music, and last summer I played 37 festivals and tour dates in the UK and Europe, including Latitude, Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City, Live At Leeds, Bushstock and Standon Calling.
I’m currently working with producer (and Square Leg head) Charlie Andrew (Alt-J/London Grammar/Marika Hackman) and collaborating with the likes of Charles Watson, Benin City, Francobollo. Adam Betts and Boris Labant. There are some really amazing tracks being created and it’s the most exciting my music has ever been. Early 2019 I sold out my headline show but then had to take a backseat on music after a rebalance within my home life and musical team. I’m back from that and within my creative bubble with an unfettered stream of raw demos planned to be released monthly over a period of 12 months from January 30th and then an album for 2021. The first track is ‘Perish’ an autobiographical song about the reintroduction of myself, followed by ‘Rosey’ getting out of dark places and ‘Talk’ a collaboration with Charles Watson (Slowclub) about heartbreak. The overall aesthetic and sentiment within this batch of demos is influenced by family, queerness, hiphop, bass and storytelling.
This will be showcased in person at the listening party at the CLF cafe Peckham Rye on February 13th 2020.
