Anti Pony – Alexander EP (Out 19/ 01/2017 via Lazy Octopus Records)

Anti Pony create “heartfelt and melodious pop wrapped in lovely rattling” I couldn’t describe them better myself, as introductions go that one-liner covers a lot of ground. They were already in WithGuitars good books, after released their debut 7 single ‘I Go Places//Cry On The Floor’ via PNKSLM/Telegram in 2014. The single also caught the attention of NME, Portals, Festivalrykten among others and Anti Pony was compared to bands like Deerhunter, The Oh Sees and Tame Impala.

The new ‘Alexander’ EP comes from spending the long nights busy as the duo consisting of Sanna Colling and Alexander Pierre spent the winter thus far, recording new music with producer Max-Måns Wikman (Dolores Haze, [nothing], Side effects, Those Dancing Days and others).  this time through the label Lazy Octopus Records, where the band previously released the singles ‘Under The Palm Trees’ and ‘Broken Dreams’.

The result is “heart-wrenching pop”, but not throwaway, there is no race to the bottom here, instead well crafted indie friendly heartworn and memorable songs, still like the cut of their jib onstage, there is a swagger, the guitar cuts more as you’d expect, bur never say I wouldn’t make it pass the street entrance potted plants, I can

do refined, but to drag myself back to point, their is more subdued detail at times seamless coupled with a sense that the slick dynamics of Anti Pony’s soundstage deepened and expanded. ‘Broken Dreams’ is a fair example the former single carries more gravitas, the song is a stonewall killer anyhow, of sugar-sweet intoxication, until some car advertiser gets hold of it for another Victorian combustion engine advert. Meantime,  ‘Pale Blue Hours’ is well delivered and musically  just shimmers. The yester-world sounds of ‘Haze’ are fair, whilst the doomed reflections of ‘When I Lie’ brings us to a close.

An encouraging 4-track release, with a couple of highlights, musically Anti-Pony are on the creative elevator, just less than a handful more conjured songs could boast a live set even further and they will be thereabouts. 7.6/10
