Hungry Ghost, which debuted at #6 in Australia and continued to hold it’s place in the ARIA top 40 8 months after its release, is an unapologetic, no-bullshit post-grunge cacophony that continues to win the hearts of many in Australia and abroad. Produced by Bryce Moorhead, whom the band affectionately refers to as “Brisbane’s Steve Albini”, the album sees VIOLENT SOHO at their best. From the opening bars of “Dope Calypso”, chock full of fuzzy, tumbling riffs through to the subtle, almost delicate psychedelic swirl of “Okay Cathedral”, to the infectious chants of “yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah…” in “Covered in Chrome”, Hungry Ghost is intelligent, melodic and dripping with attitude.
At the heart of it, the album is a character study of the personalities and ideas of consumer society that exist in their suburb of Mansfield, Brisbane. In looking at the people and stories society shuns, and tries to forget about, it examines the motivation behind consumer culture.
“It’s stuff like status anxiety,” explains frontman Luke Boerdam, “and worrying about living up to other people’s standards, and in the process becoming so distracted, sitting on the couch watching other people live their lives. That mentality is behind it.”
Comprised of Boerdam, James Tidswell (guitar/vocals), Luke Henery (bass) and Michael Richards (drums), VIOLENT SOHO have spent the majority of this year on a high, as they’ve toured their country playing to packed festival crowds at Falls, Southbound, Big Day Out, Groovin The Moo and triple j’s ‘One Night Stand’. The band began grabbing international attention with the release of their self-titled album on Thurston Moore’s label Ecstatic Peace in 2010, which delivered riff-heavy knockout tracks such as “Jesus Stole My Girlfriend” and “Muscle Junkie”. Off the back of this LP, VIOLENT SOHO won the hearts of not only fans and critics but also some of their idols, resulting in the band being invited to tour North America with acts such as Built to Spill, Alice in Chains, Dinosaur Jr and The Bronx.
