Ontario trio Basement Revolver have announced the long anticipated release of their debut LP Heavy Eyes. On the album, the band invites us into their genre-blending world where the past and present meet alongside poignant, yearning lyrics. In anticipation of the release the band has shared the intimate first track “Baby”. Now available to stream and share, the song is an expansive, echoing anthem, laden with honest emotion. Heavy Eyes will be available in full on August 24th via Fear of Missing Out Records and Sonic Unyon Records.
Songwriter Chrisy Hurn boldly shares intimate stories and personal wounds from her past, which have come together to reveal a deeply affecting and rewarding debut full length. Album opener and lead single “Baby” was written at a time when she was seemingly happy but felt an underlying sadness and dissatisfaction, “it’s about feeling confused about what I want in life, and how that affects other people. It is about crying a lot and feeling like I was burdening my partner with those questions and not wanting him to feel like he was the source of my anxiety.”
On the album are past releases “Johnny” and “Johnny Pt. 2” which story a difficult end to a relationship. There’s also “Tree Trunks”, a reflection on the parallels between mental health and environmental health. These songs have laid the groundwork and built anticipation for the band’s long awaited full length release. Their unique yet familiar sound of 90s indie rock blended with shimmering dream pop hooks have garnered attention from tastemakers and built a steadily growing fanbase – landing them at the top of the HypeMachine chart, on “Best Of” lists, and seeing their streaming numbers reach over one million.
Bringing together the talents of Chrisy Hurn (vocals, guitar), Nimal Agalawatte (bass, synth) and Brandon Munro (drums), the band hail from Hamilton, Ontario where they’ve enlisted local studio TAPE (Memoryhouse, The Dirty Nil, Single Mothers) to record each of their outputs. They have built a solid relationship with the producers and in this comfortable environment they found the freedom to explore heavier dynamics in some songs and more laid-back and intimate textures for others. It is this honest songwriting that makes Basement Revolver stand out from the rest. Assured yet open, beguiling yet honest, heartfelt yet playful.
