“a freakish talent….a name to become synonymous with star quality”
TIME magazine

Ask BC Camplight, real name Brian Christinzio, about his shimmering new single Thieves In Antigua and the response you’ll get is not what you’d expect; “It’s about hating yourself so much you force yourself to change,” he says. “That and an alien I saw in Arizona. Not kidding. It’s the beginning of the resurrection of BC Camplight”.

Since the release of his 2007 album Blink of a Nihilist, BC has earned comparisons to Todd Rundgren, Burt Bacharach, and Van Dyke Parks with his effortless tenor vocal, orchestral compositions and glistening bombastic production. Yet, having upped sticks from New Jersey to Philadelphia whilst battling numerous demons in a previous lifetime, and then falling victim to deportation during an escape to find solace in a new home overseas, his is a musical path that’s been deeply-trodden:
“I knew I’d most likely be dead or in jail if I stayed in Philly so I cleaned up and got writing. I remember closing my eyes and thinking, almost asking a higher consciousness, “tell me where to go, I need to get out of here”. One week later I arrived in Manchester knowing no one. I’ve found my dream studio, and have written my best record. It is where I feel safe and everything makes sense.”

There’s much to be said for that determination. It’s with that same drive, intelligence, precision and flawless timing of his music that BC approaches another of his favourite past-times, amateur boxing; “Boxing is a beautiful thing to watch and to participate in… it’s a chess match and if you make the wrong move you get more than your pawn taken, you get a 20 mile an hour fist in your fucking mug.”
Hitting you like a smack ‘round the chops, ‘Thieves In Antigua’s wild sense of humour and Mariachi horns recall BC’s days spent in a campervan in the desert before deciding to come back to music – not the time his track Blood and Peanut Butter appeared in a Mexican radio station’s all-time “one-hit wonders” list. They couldn’t have got it more wrong. For a while BC was down but certainly not out.
