Benny Mails premieres new single, ‘Buried Alive’ + Great Escape Festival, Ghostface Killah & Raekwon shows

Benny Mails has premiered brand new single ‘Buried Alive’. The South London rapper has was also recently invited to open for Ghostface Killah and Raekwon at The Troxy alongside Casisdead (May 11th), with additional festivals including the likes of The Great Escape, Live at Leeds and Liverpool Sound City also announced. Benny’s debut mixtape, ‘Aware’, is available now, with further new music expected to follow ‘Buried Alive’ soon.

Produced by Josh Crocker and Tom Henry, ‘Buried Alive’ is Benny Mails’ most potent offering to date, blending psychedelic tones, hard-hitting beats and the incisive lyricism of an urgent young talent. ‘Buried Alive’, writes Bennny, “is about the pressure of needing the amount of money you need in London to survive, and on the other hand not letting it become something that’s overwhelming emotionally. It’s about not allowing yourself to be stuck in the grip of debt.” 

‘Buried Alive’ is another glimpse into the unusual background and mercurial talent of Benny Mails. Brought up in the midst of South London’s grime scene whilst also listening to heroes like Nas on the one hand, and the discovery of his family’s funk and jazz records on the other, Benny’s early experiences of playing live weren’t that of a typical London rapper: Benny break-danced and performed contemporary dance from a young age with the likes of b-boy legend Crazy Legs and the Zulu Nation. Developing an innate sense for rhythm and flow inevitably filtered into his songwriting, which now assimilates a melting pot of sounds and influences: the early results of which were brought together across 2017’s debut mixtape ‘Aware’, which – suitably – was launched in-full alongside an accompanying breakdancing film.

Already, Benny Mail’s songwriting is exploring that space between the rawly personal, and the bigger picture: from the state-of-the-nation scope of ‘Buried Alive’ to the drive needed to keep going (‘Passion’), or from watching your hometown change around you (‘stix’) to even losing a family member to the darker side of London life (‘Stop. #paceword’’). Whether through music, dance, graffiti culture (or a combination of all three in Benny’s case), what emerges is the idea that the possibility to push back and define one’s place in the world starts and stops with you.
