“The sweetest voice in West London” Fader“Late night hip-hop soul with Erykah Badu overtones…a huge promise” Sunday Times “Heavy-eyed, yearning electronic R&B…an after party vibe with artful subtlety” Pitchfork“Few artists capture the smoke-filled haze of adolescence quite like Biig Piig” Crack“Heartfelt, languid…a knack of talking about the everyday that’s familiar but not dull” Loud & Quiet“Razor sharp lyrical observations about the angst and emotions of youth” Dazed & Confused
Biig Piig has today unveiled brand new single ‘Roses & Gold’, which received its first play as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World and arrives alongside an intimate bedroom live-video. Produced by JD Reid (slowthai, Mabel, Kojey Radical), ‘Roses & Gold’ follows acclaimed recent single ‘Sunny’, which picked up across the board support at Radio 1, 6Music, 1xtra and introduced Biig Piig’s third in her trilogy of audio-visual EP (available soon on RCA). The still-just-21-year-old has also confirmed details of an autumn European headline tour, which includes a London date at EartH on October 24th and follows sold-out shows at the likes of Village Underground this year. ‘Roses & Gold’ captures our obsession with the unattainable – whether material, psychological or romantic – and the importance of holding onto what really matters in these tumultuous times. Bilingual and musically multi-cultural – “sometimes it’s easier to write in Spanish when the person wouldn’t know what you’re saying about them,” says Jess – ‘Roses & Gold’ possesses the sort of intimacy and insouciant wisdom that has earned Biig Piig her impassioned audience. These at times brutally-frank vignettes of young love, identity and the general unease of navigating modern life continue to take new shapes in recent single ‘Sunny’, and the new EP to come…
Big Piig is a singer, rapper and storyteller who draws on a diverse upbringing. The oldest of four, Jess was born in Cork but spent her formative years in Spain, where her parents ran local bars and restaurants in Costa Del Sol and Marbella. Despite speaking English at home, Biig Piig only knew how to read and write in Spanish, a rocky transition which eventually landed the family back running a West London pub (with Jess working as a poker dealer in Leicester Square to make ends meet). It was here, however, that Biig Piig finally found her people: at college she co-founded NiNE8 Collective, the eight-person-strong network of London-based creatives which includes frequent producer Mac Wetha and friend Lava La Rue. And from early tracks like ‘Vice City’ – as debuted on COLORS – to ‘Big Fan of the Sesh, Vol.1’ and ‘A World Without Snooze, Vol.2’, Biig Piig has emerged a songwriter clearly growing in confidence and candour. The ability to adjust – and transform the toxicity of ‘Roses & Gold’ into a positive – is a driving force for Biig Piig. Change no longer phases her; as far as Jess is concerned, she’s her own refuge. “You have to just be your country. Wherever I lay my hat, that’s my home,” she declares. And in an increasingly fast-paced world, listening to Biig Piig feels like a sigh of relief.
