Listen to “Body

Vancouver’s Blessed are getting ready to release II on April 28th via Kingfisher Bluez (Canada) and Cointoss Records (US) and they are sharing second single “Body” today with The FADER. Blessed’s artful post-punk and twitchy indie rock sound has earned the band comparisons to everyone from Television and The Fall to Ought and Radiohead. The band’s songwriting is brilliantly locked in and carefully constructed. “Body” is built on shimmering art rock experimentation, tangled riffs, and an impeccably nimble rhythmic onslaught that warps its way into cold manipulated krautrock and expansive punk bliss.
The FADER called the single, “an extended, punky jam, clocking in at just over seven minutes, and making each feel fresh and exciting. The first half of the track is dominated by the high-fructose riffing pioneered by Deerhoof, giving way to a darker, propulsive jam that’s just as chaotic, yet well-controlled.”

Speaking about “Body,” Drew Riekman (guitar/vocals) shared:
“This song was my favourite to compose on the EP. The band as a whole had a lot of ideas that kept feeding into it, and turned it into such a long song. We’re all fans of electronic music, and had been looking for ways to incorporate it into what we’ve been doing almost since the inception of the band. We bought some keyboards and a drum machine and just started fooling around. We had toyed with the idea of a droning, stretched out piece of almost unflinching music, akin to Neu. When we started fooling around with our new instruments, we created the piece in the middle of this song. It’s become my favourite song to play live.”
Blessed’s self-titled debut earned praise from Stereogum, Noisey, Exclaim, and more, and the band played a whopping 91 shows throughout Canada and the US (which would have been 111 if not for visa troubles that derailed an East Coast tour). The band are showing no signs of slowing down either with a string of North American tour dates this Spring/Summer that stretches from May 5th to July 15th. Blessed are the type of band to play the road may lead them and the band are amazing audiences one show at a time.

Blessed is a band based on uncompromising work ethic, a commitment to democratic involvement between members, striving never to repeat itself. Comprised of members from the Fraser Valley, the off-to-the-side Vancouver suburb the group resides in, Drew Riekman, Jake Holmes, Reuben Houweling, and Mitchell Trainor came together to create something they had been looking for in their previous projects. Between the four, their projects have toured internationally (US, EU), recorded with Corin Roddick (Purity Ring), and played many esteemed festivals (Sled Island, Rifflandia, NXNE, SXSW). Blessed has, in its short existence, been fortunate enough to play alongside Garrett Klahn (Texas Is The Reason), The Courtneys, Preoccupations, Chastity, and Fucked Up. After a winter in Montreal, guitarist/vocalist Drew Riekman approached the three other members about a project designed to fulfill a desire wherein they could create music with no boundaries in it’s creative process, and tour as relentlessly as they pleased. After touring North America once and Canada three times on the strength of their first four song EP, Blessed is releasing a new four song 12” EP on April 28th through Kingfisher Bluez (Allison Crutchfield, Xui Xui) and Coin Toss Records (Drug Control, Edgewise) and cassette via Double Lunch from Edmonton.
Recorded over 7 days at Vancouver’s Rain City, the new EP finds the group exploring territory akin to Television, Wire, Deerhoof, and Liars. Experimenting with the addition of programmed drums, synthesizers, and no limits on how short or long a song could be. Mixed by Jesse Gander (Japandroids, White Lung) and mastered by Paul Gold (Akron/Family, The War On Drugs), Blessed has crafted a four song EP that clocks in at 26 minutes spanning an even vaster sonic landscape than their previous EP. Frantic yet calculated, wiry yet groove oriented, the group are expanding the definition of what band can create and still maintain its core sound.
